Nupqu Limited Partnership is a growing business, proudly owned by member bands of the Ktunaxa Nation since 2009. With offices in Cranbrook, Castlegar and Fernie, BC, Nupqu conducts a wide variety of work: providing environmental, biological, archeological, forestry, contract administration and safety related consulting services to a variety of clients throughout the Ktunaxa Traditional Territory. We are currently seeking a highly motivated, organized, and responsible individual to join our team in a dynamic and rewarding environment poised for significant growth.

 

This position will consist of full-time employment managed out of the Fernie, BC office while supporting our growing environmental monitoring project needs. The successful candidate should look to have relevant experience and qualifications which align with the roles and responsibilities outlined below.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:
Job expectations for the role will include:

•       Provide environmental monitoring services that ensure a level of confidence to the Owner that an appropriate level of protection is in place as outlined in the Construction Environmental Monitoring Plan (CEMP);

•       Review and develop CEMP, Care of Water Plans (CoW) and Erosion and Sediment (ESC) plans to ensure guidance documents meet the environmental objectives of the Project and applicable environmental legislation;

•       Monitor contractor compliance with the CEMP and subsequent Environmental Protection Plans (EPP);

•       Be present during all instream monitoring activities and support requirements for stream isolation;

•       Report and document all environmental releases to the appropriate agencies in a timely manner;

•       Ensure water quality thresholds are met under allowable TSS values and TSS instream monitoring along with general water quality monitoring;

•       Responsible for ensuring required surveys are conducted for Species at Risk (SAR), birds, badgers, herptiles, fish, vegetation etc;

•       Engage with construction team (Project team and other contractors) and internal subject matter experts (‘SMEs’) for successful delivery of the Project on a daily basis;

•       Monitor field activities to ensure the Project remains compliant, as per company and regulatory environmental requirements and standards;

•       Submit daily reports for activities related to environmental issues highlighting environmental risks and mitigation measures implemented to control the risks;

•       Maintain an independent role from contractors and other parties;

•       Expectation to lead onsite safety meetings on behalf of Nupqu and client;

•       Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules.

 

Education and Experience Qualifications:
Applicants to have the following qualifications:

·       Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience in construction environmental monitoring, preferably in the natural resource sector including mining or construction;

·       Bachelor’s Degree (BSc) in environmental sciences preferred, technical diploma would be considered pending field/work experience, training etc;

 

 

 

·       Hold a professional designation to meet the BC requirement of a qualified professional (QEP);

·       Practical experience in erosion prevention and sediment control for construction projects, including turbidity monitoring and water sampling aptitude;

·       Working knowledge of wildlife and vegetation management (birds, herptiles, badgers, fish, white bark pine etc);

·       Experience with pre-disturbance surveys, fish salvage and electro fishing certification;

·       Experience with instream flow measurements and staff gauge installation;

·       Mine and mine driving experience preferred, ability to work in remote locations and be able to communicate effectively, clean driving record required;

·       Proven oral and written interpersonal communication skills;

·       Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (i.e., Outlook, Word and Excel) including a

proficiency in mapping with ESRI software;

 

Additional skills and certifications (preferred):
Preference will be given to applicants with:

·       Certified erosion and sediment control practitioner (CESCL or CPESC) will be considered an asset;

·       Able to work shift work of up to 7 days, 10+hrs/day in a dynamic work environment;

·       Proficiency in leading the environment scope and deliverables (CEMP, TSS management, Species management plan) during the execution of the Project independently;

·       Proven experience in providing recommendations and mitigations on issued pertaining to Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC), including a working knowledge of current industry methods and procedures;

·       Proven experience with coordination between construction teams and Owners Project team in facilitating quick conflict resolution;

·       Hold the following valid certifications (OFA-1, Electrofishing Supervisor, Swift Water Rescue, UTV, BC Class 5, Mine Supervisor);

·       Proven experience in providing professional recommendations to client representatives, contractors, consultants and potentially regulators on Project environmental compliance.
