2023 Mining Microbiome Sampling and Analysis for Environmental Insights

  • Purpose:

    The project aimed to collect and analyze 2,500 samples from mining environments to contribute to the Mining Microbiome Analysis Platform (MMAP), a Digital Supercluster-funded project led by Teck. It focused on understanding microbial populations in various mining-related ecosystems.
  • Services:

    Planning and Sampling:

    • Developing site-specific sampling plans.
    • Collecting a variety of samples (surface water, groundwater, sediments, tailings, etc.).

    Data Collection and Management:

    • Using the MMAP sampling SOP and a custom app for data entry.
    • Maintaining a weekly spreadsheet of samples collected.

    Shipping and Reporting:

    • Ensuring sample integrity and shipping them to UBC within five days.
    • Providing monthly progress updates and detailed reports on costs, schedules, and deliverables.

    Safety and Compliance:

    • Preparing Environmental, Health, Safety, and Compliance (EHSC) plans.
    • On-site safety supervision and adherence to Teck Coal policies.
  • Outcome:

    The goal was to collect 2,500 samples, with plans to surpass this target to ensure contingencies for unexpected delays. The project ensured data collection from diverse zones, contributing to advancements in understanding mining microbiomes. Deliverables included detailed site-specific sampling plans, safety oversight, data integrity, and successful collaboration with Teck's project management team. Unfortunately, due to Teck’s split to Elk Valley Resources, the project was limited to collection of 500 samples over a 1-year period.
