Fording River Extension Project

  • Location: Castle Mountain, part of the Fording River Operations in the East Kootenay Region, southeast British Columbia, Canada.
  • Timeline: March, 2024 - October, 2024
  • Purpose:

    To conduct environmental monitoring and ensure compliance with environmental regulations during the 2024 exploration season, as part of the proposed extension of the Fording River Operations (FRX Project). The ultimate goal is to enable environmentally responsible exploration for extending steelmaking coal production.
  • Services:

    Environmental Monitoring

    • Freshet surface water quality monitoring (March to July).
    • Wildlife and vegetation surveys, including assessments of species at risk (e.g., birds, badgers, whitebark pine).
    • Critical riffle monitoring and turbidity assessments during construction.

    Compliance Support

    • Ensuring adherence to environmental management plans (CEMP, SMPs) and regulatory requirements.
    • Participation in daily construction meetings to align activities with environmental standards.

    Construction Monitoring

    • Oversight of construction activities, including helicopter-assisted drilling, pad constructions, and culvert installations.
    • Mitigation measures like spill response readiness and erosion control.

    Reporting and Documentation

    • Daily and summary environmental reports to track progress, incidents, and mitigation outcomes.
    • Contribution to updating the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP).
  • Outcome:

    The ongoing project ensures compliance with environmental standards while facilitating safe and responsible exploration activities. Preliminary outcomes (from daily reports) include:

    • No reported environmental incidents like spills exceeding thresholds.
    • Successful implementation of wildlife and erosion controls.
    • Detailed documentation of daily activities and risks.
